Current situation and hours of operation
Childcare centres are allowed to be at full enrollment. We are required to cohort children in their separate classrooms and cannot combine children from different classrooms at any time including the beginning and end of day. This creates staffing difficulties in terms of appropriate staff coverage and hours of operation. Each Tykes location determines their hours of operation based on the specific staffing requirements for the centre – thus having operational hours of 7:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m. will not likely happen until these restrictions are lifted. When space comes available in one of our centres, the Centre Director contacts families on our wait list. The Centre Director will discuss the specific hours of operation for their facility to see if it meets the care needs of the family.
Illness and absences for children
Children are not allowed in the centre if they develop any new symptoms of illness. Parents should monitor their children daily for symptoms (please see the Saskatchewan Self Assessment for a list of symptoms). Should symptoms develop in a child, parents are required to notify the Centre Director and call 811. Children are not allowed to return to care until 48 hours symptom free or until cleared by 811 or a doctor. Tykes and Tots will not issue any refunds or reductions in fees for absences due to illness. Please note that children can potentially be away from care for a week or more – depending on the illness and guidance from 811. Parents are advised to develop contingency plans in the event of an extended absence from childcare due to child illness.
Illness and absences for staff
Staff members are not allowed in the centre if they develop any new symptoms of illness. Staff members should self-monitor daily for symptoms (please see the Saskatoon Self Assessment for a list of symptoms). Should any staff member develop symptoms, they must inform the Centre Director and call 811. Staff members are not allowed to return to work until 48 hours symptom free or until cleared by 811 or a doctor.
Potential centre closure
If a child/family member/staff member tests positive for COVID, Tykes and Tots will follow the recommendations of Public Health. This may range from having staff and families self-monitor to closing a classroom or a centre. Parents are advised to develop contingency plans for childcare in the event that this happens. Tykes and Tots employs casual staff to cover off staff absences. Staff members are required to follow the Public Health guidelines in terms of illness and could be away for a week or more when exhibiting symptoms of illness. Also, several of our staff members are also parents and may need to be away from work in the event of their child being sick. This means that there is possibility that we may have a situation where we do not have enough staff coverage to meet the required staff to child ratio for a classroom or centre. In this event, all parents will be notified via HiMama and by phone that we cannot provide care for their child. We will do everything possible to avoid this situation but are aware that it’s a distinct possibility. Parents are advised to develop contingency plans in the event of a temporary closure. In the event of a closure, fees will be prorated for those affected families and a credit will be placed on their account.
Policy Updates and Changes
As the COVID situation changes and evolves, this policy will be updated to reflect those changes.
